Install a Satellite Dish

Difficulty Level: Average      Time Required: 30 minutes

Here's How:

1. Positioning
   For a satellite dish installed near Washington DC, the dish will usually point to a satellite in the southwest sky.
2. Site Survey
   Perform the site survey to determine the best possible position that will allow the dish to have clear view of the satellite (no obstructions). The satellite itself is generally located in a permanent orbit above the equator and just south of Texas. For Washington DC, the satellite is usually located at an elevation of 38 degrees, SW 225 degrees. Verify this location with your dish contractor.
3. Pointing
   Use a compass to find your direction to the satellite. If your compass does not have the degree markings, North=0 and continues clockwise to East=90 degrees, South=180 degrees and so on.  Approximate the angle of elevation up from the horizon. Check for obstructions (trees, buildings) that would block the view or path of the dish when aiming up at the satellite. Pay close attention that the mounting location is one acceptable to GHI rules.
4. Submit Notification Form
   Complete form SD-1  and submit to Technical Services, indicating your proposed location for mounting the dish. Indicate the date you have scheduled with the contractor for the installation.
5. Acknowledgement
   Technical Services will review the request, and acknowledge the proposal, approving as appropriate.
6. Inspection
   Contact Technical Services for final inspection of the installation.

1. Completely fill out the information on the SD-1 form to avoid delays or callbacks.
