Hedgerows dominated by non-native shrubs produce 96% less caterpillars - the food of baby birds - than do hedgerows filled with native shrubs! Help replace non-native shrubs with serviceberry trees and spicebush shrubs, which host over 105 species of caterpillars in Greenbelt. The GHI Woodlands Committee is hosting a workday on Sunday May 7 from 3:00 - 6:00pm. We will work near the Hillside Road underpass, which is between 13 and 19 Courts Hillside Road. We will meet on the bike path by the underpass, just a bit uphill from the Firefly Sanctuary.
What to bring:
- A face mask for when you are in proximity to others
- Clothes that cover your skin. We recommend you wear leather gloves and thick pants to protect against scratches, and tuck your pants into your socks
- Loppers, pruning shears, trowels, and shovels
