GHI Earth Day Invasive Species Removal

April 21, 2012

GHI manages nearly 86 acres of forested woodlands, and one of the biggest problems these woodlands face is invasive plants. These non-native plants can crowd out native ones and disturb wildlife habitat, causing a great deal of damage to the ecological system. On Saturday, April 21, GHI’s Woodlands Committee organized an Earth Day invasive species removal. Committee members and volunteers trimmed vines and branches between 58 and 62 courts of Ridge Road.

Eagle Scout Planting - 53/59 Courts Ridge

October 30, 2005

Forty volunteers helped to plant more than 100 native trees and shrubs under mature oak trees along the common area. These plants will help to create wildlife habitat and beautify the community parkland along this well-traveled section of GHI. The project was organized by scout Andrew Sillers for his Eagle Scout Award with help from the GHI Woodlands Committee.

National Public Lands Day Planting - 13 Court Hillside

September 24, 2005

The GHI Woodland Committee organized this volunteer project to plant 40 native trees and shrubs in the woodland area behind 13 Court of Hillside. This area was previously overrun with invasive plants. GHI staff and volunteers have been working to remove the invasive plants and reestablish native forest understory plants.

Woodlands Committee Native Plant Nursery "Pot-out"

April 23, 2005

To celebrate Earth Day, 15 volunteers helped to pot more than 400 native tree and shrub seedlings to create a new plant nursery. These plants are cared for by volunteers and will be transplanted into the common areas and woodlands of GHI to improve the diversity of plants growing in GHI and replace invasive non-native plants.
